When Christians Behave Badly
I call them the “Thou Shall Not” Christians
I must warn you from the start that I am emotionally involved in this story. I may just get a little carried away because it concerns a nephew and his wife. This nephew is what is sometimes referred to as a “fine young man”. A college graduate, gainfully employed, a smile on his face at all times and never a problem to his parents in particular or society in general.
His wife is what the old folks would call a “fine Christian girl.” A lifelong active member of her church, a nursing student with a pleasant personality and a lively sense of humor.
So, what was the problem? The problem was the reaction this young lady received from her pastor and others in her church when word got out that she was with child out of wedlock. Apparently, they had a hard time dealing with the fact that she and my nephew had sex outside of marriage and a baby was on the way. Someone even called her a whore. I remember the first time I met this young lady at a family gathering. Whore is not the word I would use in describing her.
But enough members of this church complained to the pastor that he felt compelled to confront this young lady and her mother. He suggested that the only way to right this wrong was for the girl to publicly go before the church and repent of her sins and ask for forgiveness.
