I can imagine a lot of people having issues with this idea. Blasphemy, they will shout. How can anyone even think of something as horrible as having a beer with Jesus Christ? Well. Why not?

I read an interview where the guest was asked, “If you could sit down and have a beer with anyone in history who would it be?” I thought about how I would answer the question. I considered the usual suspects, Winston Churchill and Attila the Hun. The late Charles Krauthammer or Ernest Hemingway. Maybe even Jack the Ripper.

Mark describes the attendees of this dinner as being all sorts of sinners, heathens and low life characters. The Pharisees, religious leaders of the time, criticized Jesus but he responded by saying that it is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick. Jesus went on to say that he had not come to call on the righteous, but sinners.

Jesus also visited the home of Matthew, another tax collector. Again, the house was filled…
