Finding God in the Good Times

You don’t have to be at rock bottom to seek God.

One of my high school English teachers talked about a concept called the Romantic Paradox. As best as I can remember it, the idea was that you have to lose yourself in order to find yourself. Some people see their relationship with God in a similar light.

One of my daughters met a missionary on an airline flight. As they talked the missionary told my daughter how her life had been at rock bottom and in desperation she reached out to God. She went on to say that she believed you can only truly find a relationship with God when you are at the worst moments in life. According to her God only works on broken people.

I respectfully disagree.

Many people have reached out to God in times of crisis and many have benefited from doing so. But I also believe that we can reach out to God in times of happiness as well. There is no reason we can not have a relationship with God in our times of contentment. In fact, I think he would want that.

I am not possessed of a great intellect, so I tend to look at things in a very simple manner. I look at our relationship with God in the same nature as a parent child relationship. After all, God did create mankind and created us in his image. We are children of God and there is no reason we shouldn’t think of our…
